GrabTab

Record a guitar.
Get the tab.

Point your phone at someone playing. GrabTab listens to the audio and watches the fretboard, then writes out the guitar tab and standard staff notation of what was played.

Coming soon to iOS & Android

How it works

A video is just a container. We pull the song out of it.

Audio tells us what was played and when. The camera tells us where on the neck. Fused together, you get a tab a person can actually play.

01

Record

Point your phone at the player. On-device smart capture frames the neck, locks focus, and records crisp 60fps video with clean audio.

02

Transcribe

GrabTab splits your clip into audio and frames. Audio gives the notes and timing; the camera reads the fretting hand for the right string and fret.

03

Get the tab

A fingering algorithm picks the most playable position and renders both guitar tab and standard staff notation. Export as PDF.

Two ways to record

Quick when you need it. Accurate when it matters.

Audio only

Quick

The fastest path to a tab. Pitches are detected from the sound — fret positions are GrabTab's best guess from a playability algorithm.

  • Works without pointing the camera at the neck
  • Great for capturing a riff you just heard
  • Tab + standard notation, PDF export
RECOMMENDED
Audio + camera

Accurate

Point the camera at the neck. GrabTab watches the fretting hand, so the string and fret it writes down are the ones you actually played.

  • Hand tracking corrects ambiguous notes
  • Correct voicing for chord shapes
  • Tab + standard notation, PDF export

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How accurate is the transcription?+

Single-note lines are usually clean. Chords and busy passages benefit from the Accurate mode, where the camera watches the fretting hand and resolves ambiguity that audio alone can't. Accuracy improves over time as the model trains on consented submissions.

Does it work for any guitar?+

Yes — acoustic, electric, classical. The camera-assisted mode is most reliable when the neck is well-lit and the fretting hand is visible.

Can I transcribe a YouTube video?+

Not at launch. GrabTab is built around recording, not third-party video ingestion — both for copyright reasons and because the camera-assist story doesn't apply to other people's footage.

Do I need to be a great player to record someone?+

No. Anyone holding a phone can capture a tab. The smart-capture screen coaches you while you record — framing the neck, locking focus, keeping the audio clean.

What can I do with the tab once it's generated?+

View it in-app, edit notes that look wrong, and export a PDF. Pro adds a synced video-over-tab render so you can practice along to the original clip.

What about copyright?+

You own whatever you record. If you record someone else's performance, the usual rules of copyright apply — use your judgment. GrabTab never publishes your recordings.

Stop tabbing it by ear.
