The short version
- There is no account and no sign-in. We never ask for your name, email, or phone number.
- Your tabs are saved on your device. When you transcribe a clip, the audio (and, in camera mode, the video) is sent to our server to be turned into a tab, then the server copy is automatically deleted after 30 days.
- That processing happens on servers in the United States, protected by Standard Contractual Clauses (see Where your data is processed below).
- Your recordings are only used to improve our model if you tap Submit correction — never silently, never by default.
- You can delete everything tied to your device at any time. See Delete my data.
Who runs GrabTab (data controller)
GrabTab is an independent, currently free project operated by Christos Melissidis, an individual based in Spain, who is the data controller for the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You can reach the controller about anything in this policy at mentoriceapp@gmail.com.
No account — just an anonymous device ID
GrabTab doesn't have user accounts. The first time you open the app it generates a random identifier (a UUID) and stores it on your device. That ID is attached to the clips you transcribe so the app can show you your own library and count your weekly free transcriptions. It is not linked to your name, your email, your phone number, or any advertising identifier. If you clear the app's data or uninstall it, that ID — and the link to your library — is gone.
What we collect
- Your recordings. The audio clip you record or upload. In camera (“Accurate”) mode, the video clip too, because we analyse where your fingers are on the neck. The video is used only to locate frets and fingers — never to identify you.
- The transcription. The tab, the notation, and the detected notes we generate from your clip.
- The anonymous device ID described above, plus a count of how many clips you've transcribed this week (to enforce the free tier).
- Basic technical logs needed to operate and debug the service (request timing, error traces). These are not used to profile you.
We do not collect contact details, location, contacts, or advertising identifiers, and GrabTab contains no third-party advertising or analytics trackers. We do not carry out any automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects about you.
Legal basis for processing
Under the GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:
- To provide the service — receiving your clip, generating and storing your tab, and showing you your library: performance of a contract / taking steps at your request (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- To keep the service working and secure — the free-tier count, abuse prevention, and technical logs: our legitimate interests in operating a reliable, non-abused service (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- To improve our model — keeping a clip together with the correction you submit: your consent, given when you tap Submit correction (Art. 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw it at any time (see below); withdrawal doesn't affect processing already carried out.
How your recording is processed
Turning a clip into a tab runs through several models. Most run on our own server; your recording is not handed to a third party except for the optional AI features you explicitly trigger:
- Note detection (pitch and timing) and hand/fret tracking run on self-hosted models on our server. Your audio and video are processed there and not sent to any other company.
- AI Tab Cleanup and the AI Practice Coach are optional features you trigger by tapping a button. When you do, the text of your tab (not the audio or video) is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, to generate suggestions or a practice plan. Anthropic processes it to return a response and does not use it to train their models. If you never tap those buttons, nothing is sent to Anthropic.
Where your data is processed (international transfers)
Our hosting provider, DigitalOcean, runs the server in the United States, so your recordings and transcriptions are processed there. When you use the optional AI features, the tab text is sent to Anthropic, also in the United States.
Because these are transfers outside the European Economic Area, they are protected by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, which both providers include in their data-processing agreements. You can ask us for more detail at mentoriceapp@gmail.com.
Training on your recordings
GrabTab's transcription gets better as more people use it, but we only learn from your recordings if you choose to teach us. That happens in exactly one place: when you correct a tab and tap Submit correction. Doing so stores that clip's audio together with your corrected tab so we can improve the model later. This is the consent described under Legal basis above.
If you never submit a correction, your clip is used only to produce your own transcription. You can withdraw consent and ask us to exclude and delete your previously submitted corrections at any time via the contact below. Recordings already used in a completed training run can't be pulled back out of a model that was already trained, but they will be removed from storage and excluded from every future run.
How long we keep it
GrabTab is local-first: your tabs are saved on your device, which is their permanent home. The copy on our server exists only to generate the tab and serve it back briefly, and is automatically deleted 30 days after it's created — so the server holds your data for a limited time by default, not indefinitely. You can delete it sooner yourself at any time (see below).
Corrections you choose to submit for training are kept until you ask us to remove them. Technical logs are kept only as long as needed to operate and secure the service.
Deleting your data
Because there's no account, deletion is keyed to your device's anonymous ID. You can:
- Use Delete my data inside the app (Info screen), which erases every clip and transcription tied to your device from our server; or
- Email us at mentoriceapp@gmail.com and we'll do it for you.
Full instructions are on the Delete my data page.
Who we share data with
We don't sell your data and we don't share it for advertising. We use a small number of processors to run the service, each acting only on our instructions: our hosting provider, DigitalOcean (where the server runs), and, only when you use the optional AI features, Anthropic (as described above). That's it.
Your rights
GrabTab is operated from the European Union and built around the GDPR. You have the right to access your data, rectify it, erase it, restrict or object to its processing, request it in a portable form (data portability), and withdraw consent where we rely on it. Since we hold no contact details, the practical way to exercise most of these is from the device that created the data, or by emailing mentoriceapp@gmail.com.
If you are in the EEA and believe we've mishandled your data, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. In Spain this is the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD), www.aepd.es.
Children
GrabTab is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes
We'll update this page when our practices change and move the “last updated” date above. Material changes will be surfaced in the app before they take effect.
